The Jewelry Fair 2011 – Elements is now open!

With four beautifully themed sims and more than 100 designers, there is so much to see and do! Jewelry and accessories, even poses are essential to modeling professionals, and aside from skins, we are forever shopping for just the right thing to wear. Jewelry Fair 2011 is the temporary home to Second Life’s top and most coveted designers introducing new and beautiful fashions all in one place. There are hundreds of items that have not been released yet and some truly beautiful one of a kind, limited release items that you can only find here.

If you need more reasons to attend, aside from just needing to get out and do something,  Jewelry Fair traditionally raises funds for Oxfam which works to feed the very poor in third world countries.  Many of the vendors are donating 50% of their sales to Oxfam.

If you really want to help out, you can participate in the Limited Edition Charity Auction, which features  some truly beautiful items that are one of a kind. 100% of those sales goes to charity.

For those who are short on funds, there are literally dozens of Gatcha machines that can make your shopping experience a little more exciting. For $20L you can purchase a beautiful new piece of jewelry, and all the profit goes to charity.

Here’s your limo to each of the sims:

Shopping isn’t the only thing you can do at Jewelry Fair 2011. The Air sim is host to some free classes and Demos, so if you’ve ever wanted to learn to learn about camera controls, prim torture, mesh or even make your own jewelry, this is your opportunity.  Here’s your ride to the classroom, and the schedule of events:

A Study of Skins

150skins

Probably one of my least favorite things to do is shop for new skins. For one thing, they are expensive, and the other, it’s hard! There is so much to consider when looking for a skin and what looks cute on the box doesn’t always look the same way on me because it’s fresh from Photoshop and probably has different lighting and shape that I do. So before buying a new skin I have a little formula that I use.

First, I define the purpose. Is this for a special outfit or occasion? Is this for print modeling or for runway? or is this for machinima? Is this for everyday wear? Each has its own requirements. If it’s a special outfit, I may be looking for certain features in the makeup or color. For print modeling I would want exquisite detail in the shading with a soft light rather than hard. For runway I would want excellent shading and shadowing in addition to strong makeup options and for machinima modeling, there is a certain quality in a skin that either rezzes or it doesn’t, and the hue has to be completely neutral. For me it’s usually just an over everyday look that want to change because I so rarely model anymore, so what I want is something that looks real enough to be likeable, soft enough to make me feel young again but with loads of makeup so I don’t have to keep putting those tattoo layers on all the time. Then I’ll go collect demo’s from everyone and take pictures. They all have to be in the same skin tone, the same lighting, no prims attached and with a plain background. That way when I do compare, it’s a fair judgement.

The example I have here is from my own inventory. Sometimes that’s the best place to go shopping since I often end up with a lot of unopened inventory at the end of the day, week or even a year.

These photos were all taken using the same pose, camera angle and everything so I can actually see the difference between them. Here’s the list of skins shown above, and a poll widget so you get to vote on which skin you would like to see me in:

  • 1 – Styles by Kira “Willow”
  • 2 – .ploom.  “Maia”
  • 3 – [LAQ]  “Trisha”
  • 4 – {essence} “Alessa”

Boho is a style that loosely combines clothing styles based on Bohemian Gypsy with a hippie influence. It may have begun officially as we take a look back to the styles of the late 1960′s only now it’s done with designer clothing and is a staple in many design houses around the world. Boho officially became a type of couture when designers needed to put a name to it in order to sell their creative ideas to the public more easily.  I can understand that. How else would you Google a style and know where to shop for components, right?

Now we can find Boho on the runway in Haute Couture, formal wear and, of course, casual styles.  Boho is a combination of what we find in a store and what we do to it to make it our own. This week, I created my own Boho style by combing Paris Metro fashion with jewelry by Mandala.  This was one shopping spree that I truly enjoyed!

  • Tank Top/Pants/Skirt and Belt by Paris Metro “Sant Tropez Tenue”
  • Necklace by Mandala “Kagetora”
  • Left Bracelets by Armidi “Summer Stacked Bangles” (modified)
  • Right Bracelets by Earthtones “Polished Goldust”
  • Hair by Lollipop Z “Julia”
  • Eyelashes by Miamai “N10″
  • Nails by Mandala “Nail Pallette 1″
